Apply for GHC's Bachelor of Applied Science Programs

Grays Harbor College offers three distinct Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree opportunities for students wanting to further their education and stay close to home. These programs are designed for regionally in demand career opportunities and applications are now open for all! Read on for a brief breakdown of each of the three programs.
Teacher Education
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Teacher Education (BAST) is designed for those with an associate's degree or higher to earn their BAS close to home. Through hands-on practicum and student teaching sessions in local schools, students will seamlessly transition into the role of educators, primed and passionate to make a difference. This degree is designed with academic rigor, enabling graduates to apply directly to Master level programs throughout the state. This curriculum has been approved by the Washington State Professional Educators Standards Board and is listed by OSPI as a state-approved teacher preparation program. The program focuses on Elementary Education (K-8) certification and the English Language Learner’s (ELL) endorsement, many GHC students graduate with both endorsements.
BAST was developed to meet the employment needs of those currently working in the classroom without a teacher credential and other working adults. Classes for the two-year program are offered in the late afternoon and evening at Grays Harbor College’s main campus. BAST candidates have the opportunity to student teach 540 hours in a local school in Grays Harbor or Pacific County, which is an excellent networking, relationship building, and learning opportunity.
2019 graduate Marlena Tolon had this to say about the program, “During my schooling at Grays Harbor College, I was able to develop a strong sense of community involvement and practical experience, which ultimately enabled me to secure a conditional teaching position in my final year. I am truly grateful for the opportunities and personal growth that the college provided, as it played a vital role in paving the way for my successful career in the field of education.”
The first step is recommended to have completed the Early Childhood Education, AAS , but any student with an associate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is encouraged to reach out, as many of the prerequisites can be taken in Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters before the next fall cohort begins. Forest Resource Management
The Bachelor of Applied Science Forest Resources Management (BAS-FRM) degree is a unique degree path for community and technical colleges in Washington State. Grays Harbor College’s BAS-FRM degree prepares students to engage professionally as foresters in public and private companies, conservation managers, wildland fire supervisors, and other natural resource professions by exposing students to the unique challenges of modern land management at varying levels.
This program places an emphasis on applying learned skills in the field as much as possible with in class instruction taking place on GHC’s main campus, and frequent field exercises and field trips for hands on experience. Scenario based activities are mixed with practical applications that accomplish real management objectives in the nearby program managed forest.
Prerequisites to apply include the completion of a Natural Resources related associate’s degree or an AAS in an equivalent field with a GPA of 2.0 of higher. Organizational Management
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Management (BAS-OM) is applicable to local employers throughout the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. The organizational management degree focus has been developed after extensive communications with our community stakeholders. In a region poised for economical growth, this applied degree is designed to help students to maximize their professional goals. Chris Dugan, the program lead says, “Our Organizational Management Program is designed to make you both an asset to yourself and your employer. We have designed and implemented our program to provide you with the tools to stay on the cutting edge of business in today’s workplace.”
The BAS-OM program is a two-year program that runs during fall, winter, and spring quarters, with entry for new students to start during any quarter. New students do not have to wait until Fall Quarter to begin the bachelors program. The program is designed with working adults in mind and classes are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 5:30-9:30 pm. These classes are flexible with both in person and Zoom options available. Some students choose to complete the degree completely through the Zoom, online option and do not need to come to campus to complete the degree.
To apply for the BAS-OM program eligible students must have earned an associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, have completed a short list of prerequisite courses. How to Apply
BAS Students may apply for the Grays Harbor College Foundation Scholarship and may qualify for Workforce Funding. There are many funding options available for prospective students. Admission into the programs is not guaranteed as the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of enrollment spaces, so reach out and apply today!
