Chapter 4 - The Human Body, Tissues and Membranes

1.Chapter 4 introduces the concept of "tissues."
What are "tissues" and how do they differ from membranes?

2. There are 4 major classes of tissues: epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous.
Develop a mnemonic or some other "trick" that will allow you to memorize the names of the four tissue types.
Be prepared to share this with other class members.

3.On a separate sheet of paper, create a one page outline of key information about tissues from the chapter.
Include in your outline the following information:
-the 4 major classes of tissues
        -subcategories of these tissues
        -where these tissues are found
-what these tissues do (their function)

Organization: use an outline style that works for you.  Don't worry about "correctness of form," this isn't an English class.
The idea is for you to organize this information is some way that is
logical to you and fits your learning style.

4.What is the difference in function between serous membranes and mucus membranes?
List one place where you would expect to find each kind of membrane?

5.Now, without looking at your notes, on a separate sheet of paper define the following: epithelial tissue, simple squamous epithelium, stratified squamous epithelium, transitional epithelium, cuboidal epithelium,  columnar epithelium, ciliated epithelium, unicellular glands, multicellular glands, connective tissue, blood, areolar connective tissue, adipose tissue, fibrous and elastic connective tissue, bone, cartilage, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, nerve tissue, exocrine and endocrine glands, collagen, elastin, fibroblasts, osteocytes, plasma, axons, dendrites, nerve cell body, serous fluid, mucus, mucous.   These are not all the terms in the chapter, but are the ones you should focus on for now.

6.List below the eleven organ systems described in your textbook.

1.                                                                    6.
2.                                                                    7.
3.                                                                    8.
4.                                                                    9.
5.                                                                    10.
11.

7.Write 3 "burning questions" that you have about the human body or how it works that you would like answered during this course.  (Note: your instructor is not a doctor. Please do not ask for a diagnosis.)  After each question, write the organ system to which you think the question relates.

Burning question #1
Organ System

Burning question #2
Organ System

Burning question #3
Organ System

You will be given 3 yellow stickies.  Record a burning question on each, note the organ system involved,
and be prepared to give these to your instructor during the next class.
You need not sign your name to any of the burning questions unless you wish to do so.
