Ch 19  -  The Lymphatic System

1. In the Cardiovascular System program of your Interactive Physiology CD-ROM, study the topic
Capillary Dynamics which is the last part of the Autoregulation / Capillary Dynamics program.

2.  Describe the structure of the lymphatic capillaries and tell how their structure contributes to their function.

• Tell where lymphatic vessels are found (and not found)
• Discuss the difference between blood plasma, interstitial fluid and lymph.
• Trace the route of lymph from the time it is created until it is returned to the blood.

3.  Discuss the function of lacteals and tell where they are found.

4.  Describe how lymph is transported around the heart since there is no "lymph heart" to pump it.

• Define lymphedema and tell why it happens.

5.  List the lymphoid cells and their functions.

6.  List the lymphoid organs (don't stop at 3).

7.  Describe the function of lymph nodes.

• Tell where you would expect to find lymph nodes.
• List three places where there are large clusters of lymph nodes and explain why these clusters are found there.
• Draw a picture that describes the histological structure of lymph nodes. Label your picture.
• On your picture, use arrows to show the route of circulation through a lymph node.  Label the various parts of the route.
• Define a bubo and tell under what circumstances one would occur.
• Tell how the lymph nodes differ from the other lymph organs in structure and function.

8.  Tell where the spleen is located.

• Draw a picture that describes the histological structure of spleen. Label your picture.
• Relate the structure of the spleen to its function.
• Describe the consequences of destruction of the spleen.

9.  Tell where the thymus is located.

• Describe the histological structure of the thymus and relate its structure to its function.
• Describe how the thymus changes during a person's lifetime.

10.  Tell where the tonsils are located and name the different tonsils.

• Describe the histological structure of the tonsil and relate its structure to its function.

11.  Discuss the locations and functions of the Peyer's patches, appendix, and MALT.

12. Do the multiple choice test at the end of the chapter.

13. The A&P Place - review appropriate material.
