Study Guide for Ch 21 - The Respiratory System

After completing this chapter, you should have mastered the objectives listed below:

1. Within the Respiratory System program of your Interactive Physiology CD-ROM, study the following five topics in the order listed:

• Anatomy Review: Respiratory Structures
• Pulmonary Ventilation
• Gas Exchange
• Gas Transport
• Control of Respiration

Download the worksheets that accompany these topics.
You are responsible for anything presented in the topics.

2. In addition to the material presented on the CDs, you are responsible for the following:

• Define respiratory volumes and capacities, dead air space, and tell how these are measured by pulmonary function tests.  I'll help with this in class if you ask.
• Explain the meaning of COPD, name the two diseases that best exemplify COPD and the features these diseases have in common.  Then briefly differentiate between the two diseases.  What is the meaning of "chronic?"
• Tell what causes TB.
• Regarding asthma, describe the relationship between bronchiospasm and inflammation. Don't get hung up on the details of the immune response.  List common "triggers" for asthma.
• List the three types of lung cancer
• Explain the connection between respiratory diseases and cigarette smoking.

3. Do the multiple choice test at the end of the chapter.

4. The A&P Place - review appropriate material.
