Ch. 21   Immunity

1.         Before beginning the chapter, review the graphs showing the incidence of diphtheria, rubella and pertussis.  Which disease is on the rise despite the availability of a vaccine?  What is the common name of this disease?

2.         Describe and contrast active and passive immunity.

3.         Describe and contrast natural and artificial immunity

4.         Describe and contrast naturally acquired active immunity, artificially acquired active immunity, naturally acquired passive immunity, artificially acquired passive immunity.  Give examples.

5.         Contrast the Salk and Sabin vaccines.  How do attenuated, inactivated, subunit and conjugate vaccines differ from one another?  Give examples of each. 

6.         What are boosters and why/how are they used?

7.         Why is a shot of gamma globulin often called an "antibody cocktail" and why would it be used.

8.         Discuss the link between vaccines and autism in children.

9.         Explain the difficulties involved in trying to develop an AIDS vaccine.
