Introduction to Microbiology
BIOL. 260
5 Credits

This course is an introduction to basic microbiological concepts and techniques.  We will explore the vast array of microorganisms and their roles in health and disease.  We will also examine the function of the immune system, and its special vulnerability to HIV.  Students will use aseptic and sterile techniques to culture bacteria in lab.

Texts for the course spring quarter, 2008 are:

Alcamo's Fundamentals of Microbiology, 8th Ed., by Pommerville.

A Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory, 3rd Ed, (or latest) by Leboffe and Pierce

You will also need to purchase a “lab journal.”  It must have sewed-in pages.

One day on a road in the English countryside,
a clergyman happened to meet Plague,
"Where are you bound?" asked the clergyman.
"To London," responded Plague, "to kill a thousand."
They chatted for a few moments
and went their separate ways.

They chanced to meet again some weeks later,
and the clergyman inquired,
"I thought you were going to kill a thousand.
How is it that two thousand died?"
"Ah yes," replied Plague.
"I killed only a thousand.  Fear killed the rest."
