2018 Student Art Contest: scenes from Campus

Below are the 13 qualifying entries for the 2018 Scenes from Campus Art Contest.

A long dark shadow of the viewer is cast down blue stairs to a yellow landing surrounded by green grass

Accomplishment

This piece represents the feeling of accomplishment to me because it depicts any student’s shadow walking down Cardiac lane after a long day of school. Sun is setting and they feel accomplished, symbolized by the tall shadow.

Actors in costumes from the various theater productions performed at the Bishop Center over the past 25 years

All Thanks to Brad Duffy

The artwork represents the strong vein of theater that we have on our campus. From Spring Musicals to Youth Musicals, Grays Harbor College provides a diverse and exciting source of theater for our community.

Sketches of creeks and plant life on lined paper from a student notebook

Forest Ecology

This collage represents four student’s journal entries from the natural resource programs forest ecology series. These were drawn on site and represent scenes from around the state of Washington, including our campus.

Going to Class

The 4000 building is known around campus for it’s beautiful architecture and I wanted to capture that. I also wanted to capture the feeling of walking to class, surrounded by nature and other students. I think GHC has a lot of beauty and I hope that comes across in my work.

Gray Harbor College Presents

Grays Harbor College is one of the few colleges I had an opportunity to attend. Here, there are students of all kinds with different ambitions and goals. One thing we all have in common is our Choker spirit. This photo of Charlie Choker is my ideal representation of our school as it stands tall and proud to be a Choker as many of the students who attend.

Exterior view of the Spellman library building on a dark, rainy night. A well-lit art exhibit can be seen through the floor to ceiling windows.

Inside Out

Walking across campus on a cold, rainy evening, I glanced up to see the contrast between the darkness of the “outside” and the light and warmth on the “Inside.” Enlightening indeed, as the building is the John Spellman Library. An extra dose of coziness derives from the quilts on display.

Two students are seated at a table discussing the contents of their class binders and notes. One of the students is wearing a t-shirt with the words "Keep Calm" visible.

Keep Calm and Study On

Studying with my friends is a very fun part of my life here at GHC. This picture shows our studiousness and dedication to our schoolwork. These two ladies have helped me this entire year being my friends and helping me with my schoolwork. I know that other students have friendships like this so that is why I chose to photograph this side of campus life for my entry.

One turtle splashes into lake Swano while a second turtle remains on a log basking in the sun

Lakeside Afternoon

On days when the sun shines in Aberdeen, (yes, it’s been known to happen), the campus seems to be a whole new place. Those are the days I wanted to represented with this piece. On those bright afternoons, turtles can be found sunning themselves at Lake Swano. Walking around the lake helps me forget about the stress of school and seeing turtles always brightens my day.

The Nature of Things

Lake Swano. I walk the trail to decompress after a long class and when I work with the GHC fish lab. The banana slug, as pictured, is common in the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and is a fun sight to see when exploring nature at Grays Harbor College.

-----------------

Red rhododendron flowers on the left, white rhodies on the right, and in the center is the old GHC ship logo floating on stencil art of salmon in a stream by retired instructor Erik Sandgren, with a view of the 2000 building as seen from the stairs leading up to it from the parking lot.

Studentship

While attending Grays Harbor College, you may feel like you are on a tall well-built ship high above the Chehalis River Basin surrounded by heart melting flowers while on an extraordinary educational odyssey.

I chose to create a mixed media collage of pictures that I took with my camera during the spring quarter of Grays Harbor College. The images I arranged represent Grays Harbor College being colorful, architecturally beautiful, healthy, and radiant. The colorful selections also represent the welcomed diversity and common “studentship” that I feel while at GHC.

Photograph of three GHC softball players in uniform staring at camera with arms folded

Unity

This picture represents three different women, from very different backgrounds, fighting against the odds to receive an education while using their strengths in sports to pave the way. The friendship and bonds created since moving to Aberdeen to attend Grays Harbor College and worth work each other as a team has truly captivated the essence of the word Unity

-------------

A painting of a book laying flat and open to the center pages with a tall ship anchored to it while in turbulent ocean waves. Dark clouds and a sunset can be seen in the background.

Waves of Challenges, Anchored by Education

My art best represents my experience with college life (online) while juggling work & family life- all full time. I also wrote an essay for English class that closely matches my art representation.

Your Dreams Are Within Your Grasp

I thought of the image while I was walking on the Schermer building, looking out across the campus. It was a beautiful view, and I reached out and looked at my hand and I thought “Grays Harbor College is a place where you reach for your dreams,” and then this image of a man sleeping in the palm of my hand came into my mind and I couldn’t lose it.
