GHC Forestry Program Hosts 15th Annual Satsop Forestry Contest
Posted on: Nov, 13, 2024
The Forestry program at Grays Harbor College recently hosted the 15th Annual Satsop Forestry Contest, a competition for high school students from around the state in agriculture, natural resources, and environmental science classes.
Each year, GHC Forestry instructor Todd Bates and Forestry students put on this contest, which tests skills like tree and tool identification, chainsaw identification and safety, timber cruising (measuring tree height and calculating board feet), and traverse (compass and pacing).
This year, six schools participated and brought 12 teams to the contest. A team from South Kitsap won.
Last spring, GHC Forestry instructor Pat Mahoney hosted the state FFA Forestry competition, which is the format that the Satsop Forestry Contest is based on. Many schools use the Satsop event as practice to prepare for the FFA Forestry contest.
