Grays Harbor College recently honored 29 students at the 27th Annual Student Awards & Recognition Ceremony. Students were recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom and contributions to GHC.

Silvan Skelly was selected for the Carpentry Student of the Year award, “because he is a dedicated student who performs at a high level academically and with hands-on work. And because he is a student leader and mentor. And because he volunteers his time to help others in our community. And because he conducts himself as a Carpenter should – with honor, respect, and dedication to the craft,” said Adam Pratt, Carpentry Instructor. “Like most of our Carpentry students, Silvan received valuable scholarships to reduce the cost of his education and training.  He was also awarded $1,240 in free tools through the Hughes Tools Scholarship. And like most Carpentry graduates, he had multiple job offers well before graduation. Unfortunately, Silvan’s hard work has left him with a terrible dilemma: he can’t decide between too many great opportunities.”

Joshua Young earned the Student Leadership Award for his work with GHC’s student government. “Josh is always on the lookout for injustice and ways to help,” said Sarah Dalrymple, Director of Student Life. “If it’s right, if it’s kind, if it brings one of his peers out of the cold and into our community, he makes sure it gets done.”

Deborah Peterson received the Outstanding Nursing Student award. “As nurses, we pride ourselves on being caring, compassionate, and resilient. Debbie is all of these things and more,” said Lindsey Kargbo, Nursing Instructor.

Angel Galeana was recognized with the Outstanding Student Employee award for his accomplishments in GHC’s Diversity Equity Center. “Angel is quick to jump in and help out his peers and his community,” said Tatiana Tejada, Associate Director of Student Diversity, Outreach and Retention. Tejada added that Galeana had succeeded in establishing Spanish/English conversation groups, which will begin next year.

Jake Conrad received the Outstanding Drama Student award, earning recognition for his accomplishments on the Bishop Center stage as well as his commitment to theater throughout Grays Harbor. “He learned how to spin a rope, to tap dance, whatever is needed he does,” said Dr. Andrew Gaines, Theatre & Communications Instructor. “Wherever Jake aims his efforts, he’s destined to be a success.”
