eLearning Requirements
Online classes can be convenient for some students while challenging for others. We all benefit from learning to work with technology, but it’s important to be prepared for success by ensuring that you have the required time and space, equipment, computer skills and study skills.
The following are key factors for succeeding in online classes. If you are considering distance education, you should answer "Yes" to all of the following:
Basic Access
- I can dedicate 10 to 12 hours a week to work on each online class.
- The computer I will use meets the basic requirements for online classes.
- I have access to a computer 5-7 days per week. (A smartphone is helpful, but you will need a computer to complete a class)
- I can normally log on to Canvas 5 days a week.
- I have a computer back-up plan in case I lose access to my normal computer/workspace.
Computer Readiness
- I know how to open, save, download, upload, and manage files.
- I can make backup copies of my classwork in case of lost data.
- I know how to do basic word processing, including cutting and pasting.
- I know how to connect to the Web using a web browser.
- I can navigate around the Web and know how to use search engines.
- I know how to send and receive e-mail.
Academic Skills
- I am able to effectively communicate in writing.
- I am able to figure things out on my own but am also able to ask for help when I need it.
- I am willing to participate in online lessons, research and discussion forums.
If you said "No" to any of these, support is available! Whether you need access to a computer, a quiet place to work, or basic computer training, we may be able to help.
